Dr. Lynnea J. Halberg of Gainesville, Georgia passed away on March 27, 2022. Lynnea was born in Springfield, Illinois on September 3, 1943 to the late LeRoy and Betty Halberg. Lynnea was a 34-year resident of Gainesville, GA where she served as Vice President for Student Affairs and Professor of Education at Brenau University in Gainesville from 1988 until a sudden illness led to her early retirement in 2005.
After graduating from Springfield High School in Springfield, Illinois, Lynnea earned a Bachelor's Degree from Eastern Illinois University, a Master's Degree from University of Illinois and a Doctorate in Student Development in Post secondary Education from the University of Iowa. Her commitment to women and diversity in higher education was evident throughout her administrative career at five institutions: Brenau University; University of Iowa; Coe College; Southern Seminary Junior College (VA) and Blackburn College. A former colleague described Lynnea as "a wonderful woman, a friend, a colleague, a model for the women of Brenau University and a leader in the student affairs profession."
Lynnea was an active member of several professional organizations including the American College Personnel Association, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Georgia College Personnel Association and the American Association of University Women. She received numerous awards and national recognition for her work in the field of student development and was a frequent presenter at professional conferences. In 2008, she was honored by being selected as an American College Personnel Association Leadership Foundation Diamond Honoree.
Active in various civic organizations, Lynnea found time to serve and support a variety of agencies in the Greater Hall County area including: Human Relations Council; Humane Society; Meals on Wheels, Rape Response, Inc. and The United Way. She was of the United Methodist faith.
Survivors include: her brother, Lee (Debra) Halberg of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; nephews Derek Halberg (Christy Johnson) of Wake Forest North Carolina and Evan Halberg of Columbia, Missouri; great-nephew, Caden Halberg and great-niece Nora Halberg of Wake Forest, North Carolina and several cousins. Lynnea's family wants to acknowledge and sincerely thank the many people who have been so important in her life: most recently, her Gainesville health care providers; her many wonderful care managers and staff in her assisted living community; her "Camp Brenau" colleagues, students and support staff and her many personal and professional friends.
