Leo John Garvert, DVM, 91, of Springfield, died at 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at St. John’s Hospital. Leo was born on August 5, 1914 in Plainville, Kansas, the son of Aloys and Helena Seck Garvert. He married Mary Louise Curry on June 3, 1944 in Kansas City, KS. He earned a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine. He owned and operated Garvert Animal Hospital from 1946 – 1963. He retired in 1985 from the Illinois Department of Agriculture where he had been employed in regulatory medicine as a veterinarian for twenty-two years. Leo was a member and usher for many years at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and also a member of Knights of Columbus Council 364 and Knights of Columbus Bishop Griffin Assembly 4th Degree, CIVMA – Central Illinois Veterinary Medical Association and ISVMA – Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association. He was preceded in death by seven brothers: Lawrence, Adam, Aloys, Joseph, George, John, Clarence and Lawrence Garvert and two sisters: Cecelia Mauler and Marie Meyers. Surviving are his wife of sixty-one years, Mary Louise Garvert of Springfield; one son: John Curry Garvert of Springfield; five daughters: Melinda L. Garvert and Joan H. Garvert both of Springfield, Mary “Rita” McCarthy and Sarah “Sally” (husband, Roberto) Restrepo both of New Berlin, and Frances “Leone” (husband, Chad) Quick of Davisburg, MI; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2006 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 1, 2006 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield with Fr. David Hoefler celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
