He was born on February 15, 1942 in Taylorville, IL, the son of the late Earl and Nellie Leoda (Mahan) Adams. He married Shirley Jane Kiefer on October 16, 1986 in Taylorville, IL.
In his youth, he traveled the world, hitchhiking across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East for several years. After returning to the U.S., he graduated with his B.S. in Zoology from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1969. He was proud of his time as a teacher in Florida, where he brought innovative methods and his love of life into the classroom. He built a career as a ship’s pilot for Bethlehem Steel on the Great Lakes. He loved everything about his job, from the hard work to the friends he made throughout his time on the Lakes.
In retirement, he enjoyed taking bicycle rides around town with Ralphie, the family dog. He loved watching all sports, keeping up with world news, reading, and spending time with his family. Everyone who knew him knows that he loved a good story and was always ready to spend time talking with anyone and everyone.
Besides his wife Shirley, he is survived by 4 children, Heather (husband Scott) Ohl of Assumption, IL, Mark (wife Katie) Adams of Austin, TX, Angela Adams of Taylorville, IL, and Kiley Adams of Kansas City, KS; 2 grandchildren, Brock and Sydney Ohl; 2 brothers, Lyle (wife Judy) Adams and Dick (wife Cindy) Adams, both of Taylorville, IL; 5 nieces and nephews, Lindsey Schaefer, Brad Adams, Lori Sassatelli, Jordan Adams, and Clark Adams. He was preceded in death by his nephews Scott and Mark Adams.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield. Per his wishes, cremation rites were accorded. No services are scheduled at this time.
