Judy was born June 16, 1940, in Oakford, to Collie J. and Laura May (Ishmal) Altig, in the same house that her great great grandparents moved and established in Oakford.
Judy was a “Daddy’s Girl”. Early in her life, she worked picking berries to pay for her 4H membership. She earned many blue ribbons at state and county fairs for her floral displays and designs. She was known as the family historian, researching and recording family genealogy.
In high school, and then while then at Springfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Judy made life-long friends. She was a member of the Nursing Class of 1961 and would devote herself to the care of others for over 60 years. She was known for her expertise and efficiencies of elder care and nursing home administration.
Her care and concern for others was never more evident than the time she closed up her own home for over a year, traveling to Ohio to care for her daughter in law who was going through treatments for Leukemia. Judy was a strong and independent person, once traveling over 400 miles by herself to attend a family reunion.
Judy was a women of faith. She was a member of Temple B’rith Shalom and the Sisterhood for many years. She was also a life member and past president of the Springfield Chapter of Hadassah and member of Springfield Jewish Federation. She was an avid reader and a member of various book clubs. She was also a member of the garden club in Petersburg, IL.
She married Harvey Shapiro, they later divorced. She then married Richard M. Foster February 14, 1986 and he preceded her in death February 10, 2008.
Surviving is her son, Eric (April Lynne) Foster of Lynchburg, OH, three grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements are in the care of Bisch and Son Funeral Home 505 E. Allen St. Springfield, IL where the family will greet friends, Monday, February 27, 2023 from 10:00 am until the time of a funeral service at 11:00 am. Rabbi’s Lynn Goldstein and Michael Datz will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge
