Joseph M. "Joe" Boggs

Joseph M. "Joe" Boggs, 57, of Springfield, died at 7:04 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center. Joe was born March 2, 1959 in Northridge, CA, the son of Berthold M. and Ellen Louise Brennan Boggs. He married Debra Miller on March 15, 1997 in Springfield. Joe retired from the Secretary of State in 2011 after more than 30 years of service. Joe was an accomplished local artist and former owner of Drawing Attention Art Services and was also a master carpenter. He was an avid Illini fan, especially of Illini basketball. Joe created many art pieces that were sold at New Salem and various other offices in Springfield, and his artwork was also shown on The Today Show. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Robert P. Coleman, Jr.; three brothers, infant brother James Perry Boggs, Timothy Allen Boggs, Robert Patterson Coleman, III; and dear aunt, Becky. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Boggs; two sons, Brendon Boggs of Jacksonville and Benjamin Boggs of Springfield; two daughters, Lindsey (husband, Ryan) Vogel of Petersburg and Kelsey (husband, Derek) Althouse of Clinton; five grandchildren, Aubry, Payton and Reese Vogel, Kyla Boggs and Matthew Althouse; seven siblings, Mark Boggs of Glenarm, Kevin Boggs and Keith Boggs, both of Springfield, David Coleman of Casselberry, FL, Penny (husband, Maurice) Mayer of Riverside, CA, Paula (husband, David) Poppenhouse of Chatham, and Brenda Boggs of Temecula, CA; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center following ceremonies. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, 2941 Koke Mill Rd., Springfield, with Rev. Michael Whitaker officiating.
