

John D. Underwood, 54, of Springfield, died at 9:35 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at his home. John was born November 17, 1960 in Vandalia, IL, the son of Merle Eldon and Mary Louise Logue Underwood. John earned his bachelor's degree in Accounting from Sangamon State University and was in the last graduating class before it changed to University of Illinois-Springfield. He was employed with Franklin Life for ten years. He later went to work for the State of Illinois, first in Child Support and then as an Internal Auditor for the Illinois Department of Transportation. He attended Koke Mill Christian Church and was the Treasurer of the local AFSCME union. He enjoyed a good cup of Starbuck's coffee, was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and loved spending time with his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his siblings, Merle Underwood of Tyler, TX, Carl Underwood of Beecher City, IL, Marilyn Underwood of Cincinnati, OH, Marie Dye of Altamont, Mary Devall of Effingham, and Gary Underwood of St. Elmo, IL; numerous nieces and nephews; best-friends, Tim and Melissa Mella; the family of Paula (companion, Jimmy Crisp) Fenno, Justine Rozplochowski, and Hunter Ridley; and his Cockapoo, Gordy. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Ceremony and Gathering: 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2015 with the gathering to follow until 7:00 p.m. at Koke Mill Christian Church, 475 S. Koke Mill Rd., Springfield with Pat Kessler officiating. The family encourages any Chicago Cub fans in attendance to wear their favorite Cubs attire in memory John, and all St. Louis Cardinals fans are welcome too.
