John Edward Rigney passed away at his Chicago residence on June 25, 2023, from complications of epilepsy. He was born in Springfield, IL, on October 19, 1978, the son of Jack Rigney and Christine Lehmann Rigney. John graduated from the University of Illinois in Springfield, and Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was employed by the City of Chicago as a litigator and was a certified CPA. John created a newsletter that his department will be renaming after him in his honor. John served as the President of the Committee of Inclusion and Diversity and also served as the President of his condo association.
He is survived by his partner, Becky Cutler of Chicago; parents, Jack and Janet Rigney of Petersburg, and Christine Rigney of Springfield; sisters, Stephanie (Mike) Ambrose and Kristen (Evan) Branham of Springfield; brother, Lee Rigney of Chicago; daughter, Victoria Rigney; aunts and uncle, Marcy and Gary McBride of Rochester, and Virginia Kunz of Springfield; several cousins; three nieces; and two nephews.
John enjoyed traveling, golfing, cycling, collecting vintage Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) signs, and was a premium board game player. He was fiercely loved by his family and friends.
Visitation: Family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield, IL.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos Ave., Springfield, IL with Rev. Daniel J. Bergbower, V.F., celebrant. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
