John J. Moloney, 87, of Springfield, died at 7:15 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2009 at St. John's Hospital. John was born June 29, 1922 in Kildysart, County Clare, Ireland, the son of John Charles and Deliah Shannon Moloney. John was the oldest of six children and was raised in Ireland. He served as a medic in the Irish Army during WWII. He came to America in 1949 and became a U.S. citizen on January 10, 1955. John was a tailor. He had been employed by Roberts Brothers, Myers Brothers, Bonds Clothing Store in Kansas City and was most recently a tailor with the Illinois State Police for twenty-five years. John also taught tailoring at Springfield College for a while. He retired in 1999 at the age of 77. John was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He was a former member of Eagles Club 437. John was a loving and charitable man who had never met a stranger. He was a great gardener and particularly loved tending to the vegetable garden in his own backyard. He also enjoyed fishing and dancing and was an instructor for Arthur Murray Dance Studios. John was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by a son, Sean Michael Moloney of Springfield; three daughters, Kathleen (husband, Bjorn) Reddington of Carpinteria, CA, Marguerite Moloney of Pensacola, FL and Cicily (husband, Braden) Sterling of Ojai, CA; three grandchildren, Arianna and Isabella Sterling and Catriona Reddington; former wife, Catherine Moloney; and many nieces and nephews. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Family will receive friends for a memorial gathering from 3:30 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2009 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield with Rev. Anthony Pilli celebrant.
