John Joseph Cook, 85, of Springfield, passed away at 11:41 p.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2002 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born June 8, 1917 in Sandoval, IL the son of John A. and Elizabeth Baumgartner Cook. He married Julianna Burchik Gabriel on June 8, 1956 in Springfield, IL. Mr. Cook worked for Hummer Manufacturing from 1935 until 1962, the Great Northern Equipment Company for seven years, and then for the State of Illinois from 1968 until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of St. Aloysius Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars #755, State of Illinois Retirees AFSCME, and the Old Timers Bowling League at Kingpin Lanes. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army, receiving the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was an avid miniaturist and built many dollhouses and furniture and loved gardening and wildlife. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one stepson, Lewis Umbenhower. He is survived by his wife, Julianna of Springfield; two sons: John W. (wife, Joyce) Cook of Austin, TX, and Edward A. (wife, Barbara) Cook of Springfield; two step-daughters, Sonja Estes of Springfield, and Alix Means of Springfield; two stepsons, Michael P. Gabriel of Seminol, FL, and Julian P. Gabriel of Foxton, CO; sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, several nephews, one niece, and several cousins. Friends may call at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home from 5-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2002. Visitation will begin with a Prayer Service at 5:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 28, 2002 at St. Aloysius Church with Fr. John M. Titus celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Springfield, 120 S. 11th Street, Springfield, IL 62703.
