John was born on September 3, 1940 in Springfield, the son of Nicholas and Grace Tesone Bax. He married Carole Franklin on November 30, 1963 in Springfield.
John was a 1957 graduate of Cathedral Boys High School. He served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee in the 122nd Battalion. He worked for the United States Postal Service for over 30 years, retiring in 2007. John enjoyed gardening, fantasy football, spoiling his grandchildren, and was a lover of animals.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Rosalena “Rosie” Ray and Esther Gentry.
He is survived by his wife, Carole Bax of Springfield; two sons, Jeff (wife, Chrissi) Bax of Springfield and Chris (wife, Tina) Bax of Rochester; one daughter, Tracey (husband, Mike) Chambers of Athens; seven grandchildren, Nick, Cassie, Baylee and Zac Bax and Kaleb, Delayne, and Macey Chambers; one sister, Lucille Metz of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Memorial Gathering and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 8:30 until 9:15 a.m. on Friday, March 5, 2021 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2000 East Sangamon Avenue, Springfield. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. with Rev. Clinton Honkomp, O.P., celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery. Due to COVID restrictions there will be limited capacity.
