Happy 62nd Birthday to you in Heaven, in the Shire - this January 22nd, 2024.  I picture you sitting on a log, in the forest, looking out over the tops of the mountains as the Eagles and Hawks sore overhead - while Tiger & Julie sit next to you.  Have a blessed, Heavenly day.

How can it be 12 years since you left, 6 a.m. on August 12th? How can it be that the beautiful house that you built - with your own two hands - has now sold twice? How can it be that we have gone on with out your laughter and wit? I do receive signs from you, and hold on to photos and memories for peace. This photo always makes me giggle, taken at the Current River (our favorite place to get away) You were reenacting what took place that day - we laughed and laughed and laughed! We did have fun, and those moments I shall always cherish. Smiles to you, in Heaven.

How can it be 10 years today since you were taken from us? It doesn't seem possible. We are all aging down here on Earth and I know that you are now 25 years old forever. This morning I saw a wood stork- or what they call a Wood Ibis -gliding just above the forest treeline  over Gin Ridge in front of my house. It was 6 am.  I remember us witnessing the wood Ibis flying just south of your magnificent house that you built -over the pond. We were sitting on the deck.  This wood stork was so enormous and so Graceful we couldn't believe how large it was... and we were puzzled at what it actually was because they are very rare. I would have to think that this morning I was given the gift of a sign from you for I have not seen a wood stork since that day in 2002 with you. It was September 20th. Thank you for the many signs you bring me. Life goes on on Earth, and I know you're very busy in heaven with things you are directed to do. Thank you for thinking of me. Dear Jeff, I know you are very busy in Heaven, still experiencing new adventures and may have no more connection to your earthly birthday, but we remember.   Happy Birthday on this day, Jan. 22nd.  You would have been 57.  So young.  Until we meet again.

I no longer wonder why God allowed you to leave my world.  So much as been under the light of truth since you've been gone...your death my dear brother has benefited me.  I'm thankful that you do not have to suffer the losses of this world and that I will see you soon.

Jeff, how can it be that you departed this earth 7 years ago this Sunday on August 12th?  So much has changed, and we continue on,  yet our hearts still grieve.  Know that we still miss you and still welcome signs from you.  I know you are most likely busy in the Shire....with Tiger, Julie and now your Mother Ann by your side-  as well as Bessie, Gwendolyn, B-boy and Panther...It is generally this time of year, that we would venture to the Current River, before College started up again (where we worked).  Therefore, I thought it fitting to post this picture of you.  A good memory, and also where I would like to picture you now, alive in the Shire waters...smiling and carefree as we were then, keeping you forever in our hearts and memories. 

Happy Birthday Eve Jeff Herrick in Heaven. You would only have been 56!   Why God took you so young, we will never know.  It seemed we lived a whole lifetime, we did so much.  You helped me with so many things in my life. We were side by side as environmentalists, fought the coal company and won finally, we built a house together,You started my greeting card line YOU believed in me, we worked hard and played hard when time would allow...and you helped me bury my parents.  There's so many things...we taught each other so much.  I am living each day the best that I can...trying to do my best and trying to make each day count.  God Speed, Jeff. Tomorrow, August 12th, will be six years since You have departed from us.  I know you are busy with your new forest and places to tend to. You will be happy to know that due to our research and hard work, there will be a special land donation put in place for preservation from the coal mine's fines that we fought so hard on together. Since I live in Boston, I only just found out about Jeff's passing.  I had been wondering why he had stopped communicating (email) with me.  He and I were constant friends from 9th grade at Grant through high school at LHS.  I am so glad I got to see him when I was in Springfield in Aug. of 2010. Tiger Lily Bell who lived with Jeff almost all her life, Born April 16th, 1995 (Easter Sunday).  Departed from this Earthly level December 8th, 2012 at 10:15 a.m.

 God Speed my little Angel as you reunite with Jeff. You meant so much to me and you taught me so very much. You are now with your Mommie Blackie, your sister Panther, your Brother "Baxter" (you know his real name) and of course Jeff.   Fly with the eagles, climb the tallest trees and bask in the sunshine of Heaven - let your fur sparkle in the warmth  that you loved so much as you sit next to Jeff Fishing. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this most difficult time.I knew Jeff for only a short time but enjoyed working for him when i dug the basement for his house.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Jeff really did live it that way. He was lots of fun to work around, and with. The memories in the guest book do, depict him as he really was. I will always remember him that way.

We met Jeff through his efforts to protect the outdoors that he loved.  It was always a pleasure talking to him because of his amazing intelligence and sense of humor.  He was a true friend.

I have worked around Jeff since He came to work at W.I.U., and enjoyed talking to him almost ever day. I am so sorry for the families loss he was a great person, and I will truely miss Him.

This is Jeff's Mom and I wish to express my appreciation for all the wonderful words about Jeff. He was a good son,and yes his humor and smile was Jeff.His teachers used to tell me of moments in the classroom. It hurts so much that he is gone. I can't believe this my heart is broken and it hurts so much. I will miss him so much.This has got to be the hardest thing ever.It so unfair he was taken so soon.

Jeff was fellow employee at Western, and I was sadden when I heard of his passing. I enjoyed talking and joking with him. He was a neighbor of my uncle and lived just down the road from where I lived many years ago. I will miss him.

Jeff was a favorite cousin.  We were two of the younger ones so when we were little we always looked up to the older cousins and couldn't wait for the adventures we enjoyed together.  Being the city cousin, along with my sister Cheryl, going down to Iola and knowing that along with Bruce and Ramona that Lynn, Debbie and Jeff were going to be there too made it extra special. As adults Jeff and I talked many times about things we cared about;family, animals and the environment.  I remember visiting him in Colchester and the two of us went out by his pond, cooked out, fished a little and then slept out under the stars, listening to all the night sounds.  He would also try to make me laugh or we would share wonderful memories of things we did as kids.  I will miss you ,cousin, but I know you are up there with Cheryl and lots of our parents.  What a reunion we will all enjoy one day in heaven!  Your  time here was so brief, but you made every minute count and you made a difference in this world and you spread a lot of love and joy to many people.

Jeff has been a great friend to me for thirteen years now. We work together at WIU. It was always fun to cut up with him because we shared the same slightly synical sense of humor. He was so sharp at anything he put his hand to. We had common interests in physics,investing,motorcycles and adventure in general. Although we did not know each other as teens we learned that we did about the same outlandish stuff. I still can't accept that he is no longer with us.
   Jim, I am soooo sorry this happened. No man should have to outlive his children. With a little mustard seed faith we will all be together again. 
    So long for now Jeff . I love ya man.

Thank you so much for posting the great photos of Jeff.  I had known him since Kindergarten and the last time we talked was at our 20th class reunion.  I kept up with him through our mutual friends and was glad he was doing well.  I will miss his smiling face and laugh and my sympathies go out to all of Jeff's family and friends.  He will be missed by us all.

I will always remember Jeff as a special person, he was very helpfully to our family and did so many kind helpful things over the years. Jeff was so quick to make us laugh all the time. My son Steven Who also passed away really loved Jeff and he looked up to him.   Jeff was also very good to my mother and helped her in so many ways before she passed on. I only wish that I could have thanked him more for all his kindness.  Loosing Jeff is a great loss to all. My heart reaches out to his family.

They say there is a reason for everything.But I can't see no reason for this.I had no idea a person could hurt so much. It's hard to believe that Jeff is no longer with us.  He was a very unique individual who was extremely intelligent and fun.  His concern about the environment and his love for animals was unsurpassed.  Jeff also cared about people.  He was very helpful and supportive to members of our family over the years.  The world would be a much better place with more people like him.  All who knew Jeff will miss his smiling face and quick humor.

I was very sorry to hear of Jeff's passing. The first thing I thought of was how we will all miss his great sense of humor. He was so good with a gentle quip that would bring a smile  or a laugh to those folks around him. He was a great guy to be around, a expert in his field of work, and a quiet and intelligent person. We will miss him greatly.

I met Jeff when he was working on elevators at WIU.  He maintained them in several of the buildings that I have worked.  Jeff just lived a few miles from me and, at one time, dated my good friend, Kim.  Jeff was a sweet guy with a twinkle always in his eye.  I enjoyed chatting with him when I had the chance and watched for a friendly wave from him when I drove by his house, which was nearly every day.  He will missed.  My condolences to his family and friends.

My thoughts are with Debbie and the  family during this stressful time.

Jeff was a pleasure to work around.  I didn't see him often but he was always consistent in his treatment towards others.  He was always the same, happy go lucky. You could tell he enjoyed his life and people.  My sympathies to his family.

I remember Jeff for his incredible personal dedication to try to save the timber and wildlife areas along the Grindstone Creek from strip mining by the Industry Mine. Jeff worked with Kim Sedgwick for years and the trees left standing are a testimony to their hard work and perseverance. No one knows the huge personal sacrifice, stress, and difficulty it is to try to fight a coal mine in Illinois until you have done it. Jeff and Kim got a buffer zone and saved much more of the woodland. Thank you Jeff for your courage and dedication. Your work will not be forgotten.

Without a doubt, Jeff was one of the most rounded guys I've ever had the pleasure to call my friend.  His sense of humor was unmatched.  His skills were exceptional.  And his never ending quest for knowledge was admirable.  I believe that God does everything for a reason.  And I believe His reason for taking Jeff from us, was to share him with others. I know that the unexpected loss creates so much sadness.  But I'll bet Jeff has never been happier.

From reading all the memories of Jeff, I realize what a great guy who lived down the road from me.  I did visit with him occasionally when I worked in the Physics Department as he would come in to collect old physics journals.  He said he just liked to read them in his spare time.  I agree Jeff's smile was endearing and he had a nice smile.  I am so sorry for your loss.  May your memories and faith sustain you!

I feel blessed to have known Jeff! I worked with him at Western. I saw him everyday. He was a true joy! I will miss his smiling face.My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

May all those who knew and loved Jeff find peace despite his untimely passing. 

I didn't know him well, but I talked to him a few times at Thompson Residence Hall (on the WIU campus).  I work the 24-hour front desk of Thompson during summers, and last summer, I never saw Jeff enter the building without a smile on his face.  Once, we were momentarily stuck on an elevator he was working on, and he had me in stitches because he is so funny.  I only saw him a couple times this summer, but, per usual, that smile was always there, usually followed by a joke.  We who live and work on the WIU campus are grateful to have had a mechanic like Jeff around to keep our University running, but most importantly, to keep smiles on our faces.  Thanks so much, Jeff!
