James Eldon Smith, 85, of Quincy died at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2009 at the Quincy Veteran's Home. James was born November 28, 1924 in New Berlin, the son of Gilbert Emmitt and Elsie Catherine Herr Smith. James was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He loved to garden and farmed with his dad for several years. He also worked at Lincoln Land Community College in the maintenance department for several years. James enjoyed attending local sporting events. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Marvin Smith. He is survived by his sister, Zeda Hunt of Palmyra; brother, Lester (wife, Betty) Smith of Chatham; and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at McCullough-Delaney and Butler Funeral Home, 714 E. Gibson, New Berlin with Pastor Lloyd Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow at Sulphur Springs Cemetery in Loami. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Loami Rescue Squad, c/o Loami City Fire Department, 101 N. Main St., Loami, IL 62661.
