James Russell Rigdon

James Russell Rigdon, 77, of Sherman, passed away at 4:44 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at St. John's Hospice. James was born December 26, 1937 in Springfield, the son of Donovan and Aleen Mock Rigdon. He married Janet L. McHenry on September 2, 1961 in Springfield at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church where they were members. James was a graduate of Feitshans High School and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was employed as a diesel mechanic for 23 years and then for 15 years as a correctional officer at the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department before retiring. James was a member of the Sherman Athletic Club, the Masons at St. Paul's Lodge, and the Sangamon County Sheriff's Patrol. He enjoyed fixing things, traveling, and collected hats, model planes, and trains. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Wayne Rigdon; and one sister, Barbara Jean Adams. He is survived by his wife, Janet L. Rigdon of Sherman; one son, Keith (wife, Jennifer) Rigdon of Sherman; two daughters, Dawn (husband, Jay) Tusing of Athens and Kimberly (husband, Drew) Pounds of Charleston, IL; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Max (wife, Pat) Rigdon of Springfield; one sister, Sue Truax of Edinburgh; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Cremation will be accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Memorial Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Larry D. Quanbeck officiating. Private interment will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery at a later date.
