James Otto Mees, 79, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024 at Bridge Care Suites in Springfield. He was born on March 25, 1945 in Peoria, IL, the son of the late Robert and Susie (Langston) Mees.
James attended Peoria Public Schools and was the class president of Richwood High School, class of 1963 and played on the tennis team. He graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN in 1967 majoring in history. He taught 6th grade in El Paso, IL and then moved to Springfield to serve as a Senate aide with the Illinois State Senate. He was a reporter for the Loftus newspaper of Decatur, IL. He also worked at the local Caterpillar dealer in Springfield. Following that he served the City of Springfield as Grants Coordinator for the Department of Community Development. He held that position for 20 years. After retirement he drove a school bus for District 186.
James was the 2nd child of Robert T. and Susie Langston Mees. He has an older sister, Christine Schultz, and two younger sisters, Karen Johnson and Kathy Wanda. His only brother, William, preceded him in death. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He married Patricia Roland in 1984 and they were married for 27 years and she survives. Their son, David, also survives.
James was a member of the Jaycees and three Lutheran Churches, First English, Grace, and St. John’s Lutheran. He loved to read and watch the St. Louis Cardinals.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd., Springfield, where visitation will be held on Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 9 am until time of the Celebration of Life service at 10 am. The service will be officiated by Pastor Tom Krieger. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield.
