James William Greenwood, 93, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday September 15, 2013 at The Regency. He was born on April 22, 1920 in Williamsville, IL., to Fred and Ada Poynter Greenwood. He married Wilma Tucker from Pleasant Plains on August 21, 1941 in St. Charles, MO., and she preceded him in death on August 18, 1996.
He is survived by his daughter Darlene (Gary Doolen) Greenwood of Springfield, special friend Joan Curl of Springfield, nieces, nephews, and many other friends. Mr. Greenwood was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald Greenwood, and his sister Dorothy Williams.
Jim graduated from Williamsville High School in 1938 and started working in the wholesale plumbing and heating business. He served in the US Army from October 1941 to March 1946, which included an assignment in the Philippines. He returned to work, and with three other partners, founded Illinois Plumbing and Heating in Springfield in 1951. After retiring in 1986 Jim wintered in Florida and Texas where he golfed and spent time with friends. He also enjoyed many trips while he worked as well as in retirement. He was a member of Douglas Avenue Methodist Church and a life member of the Elks.
A funeral service officiated by Dr. Robert Swickard will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday September 18, 2013 at Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 Koke Mill Road with burial to follow at Pleasant Plains Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 9:00am until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home.
