Howard Marshall Turner, 81, of Troy, Illinois passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2017 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. He was born on June 4, 1935 in Petersburg, Illinois to Lawrence and Marjorie Miller Turner.
Howard married Gloria Ankrom and she preceded him in death in 2015. Mr. Turner is survived by his three children; Ken (Deane) Turner and Bruce Turner both of Maryville and Joy (Bob) Edgeworth of Troy, one brother Jim Willet, one sister Judy Mudd, four grandchildren: Ashley (Travis) Esmon, Kristine, Megan, Allison Turner, and two great grandchildren: Jake and Elois Esmon. He was preceded in death by five brothers: Lewis Turner and Cecil, Robert, Ernest, and Daniel Willet and one grandchild Melissa Hoppe.
Howard grew up as a simple farm boy who wanted to see the world, so he joined the US Navy. During his career he served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt and the USS Enterprise in Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam and the Mediterranean. He had a forty year career with the US Government, twenty years with the Navy and twenty years with the Corp of Engineers. Howard was a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion in Edwardsville. He attended Bethel Baptist Church in Troy. He enjoyed bowling, auto racing and fishing. He was a devoted St. Louis Cardinal fan and was a proud master to his beloved Labrador Sheena.
A formal service will be held at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen Street, with burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 11:30 AM until the time of service Wednesday at Bisch and Son.
