Howard C. Hayes, 89, of New Berlin, passed away at 2:36 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center. Howard was born on November 24, 1927, the son of Clyde and Ruby Funderburk Hayes. He married Polly Lowry on April 5, 1953 in Marshall, IL. Howard graduated from Taylorville High School, class of 1945. He served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was very proud of his service. Howard was awarded the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. He worked for Curran Township for 36 years as a Curran Township Road Commissioner and was a farmer and a bus driver in New Berlin for 26 years. Howard was known to be a tender-hearted, hardworking man who loved animals and woodworking. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Bryce Hayes. He is survived by his wife, Polly Hayes of Chatham; daughter, Felicia (Matthew) Burns of New Berlin; grandchildren, Annie, Cameron, and Janie Burns; two nieces, Roberta Meyer and Donna Lowry Gilmore; and one nephew, Allen Lowry. Funeral Ceremony and Visitation: 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at McCullough-Delaney & Butler Funeral Home, 714 East Gibson, New Berlin, with Rev. Anthony Bliss officiating. Visitation will follow until 7:00 p.m. Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Zion Cemetery in Marshall, IL.
