Gerald was born April 1, 1939, in Washington, DC, the son of U. S. Army Ervin C. and Lillian G. Fallos Staples.
He graduated from Feitshans High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Gerald was employed as a meter reader for CWLP until his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post #32. Gerald enjoyed yardwork, feeding the hummingbirds, keeping a tidy home, his car collection, loved his grandfather clock, and helping others. Gerald was a die-hard Chicago Cubs and U of I basketball fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; aunts, Juanita Woods and Pat Fallos; and uncle, Harold Fallos.
Gerald is survived by his brother, Bill Staples of Springfield; niece, Samantha Staples of Springfield; great-nieces, Kaylee and Kaytlin Staples; great-great-nephew, Kai Staples; nieces, Dawn Staples and April Staples; nephews, William Staples, Jr. and Chad Staples; niece, Cindy Geiger; great-niece, Makayla Rhodes; stepson, Wesley Gary; and his beloved cat, Millie.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL.
Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield with Pastor Clint Cook officiating.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, American Cancer Society, or Adams Wildlife Sanctuary.
