George J. Murphy, 92, of Springfield, died at 2:07 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2016 at his home. George was born August 17, 1923 in Mounds, the son of Henry James and Lora Murphy. He married Onie K. Dixon on March 18, 1946 in Mound City. George served as Maintenance Supervisor for the Housing Authority of Pulaski County under the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joseph and Alvin Murphy; and one sister, Rosia Childress. He is survived by his wife, Onie Murphy of Springfield; seven sons, George (wife, Annamarie) Murphy, Jr of Harker Heights, TX, Donald (wife, Jane) Murphy of Springfield, Daryl (wife, Coty) Murphy of Springfield, Garry (wife, Diana) Murphy of Mesa, AZ, Dennis (wife, Nicole) Murphy of Cahokia, G. Keith (wife, Tawana) Murphy of Bloomington, and Dirk Murphy of Phoenix, AZ; four daughters, Sandra (husband, Carletos) Meeks of Mounds, Janice (husband, Lynn) Clark of Marion, Lora Murphy of Tempe, AZ, and Kimberly Murphy of Bloomington; twelve grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas (wife, Rose) Murphy of Chicago and Henry (wife, Marcena) Murphy of Dixmoor; and several nieces and nephews. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Ceremony: The family will host a memorial ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 4800 Old Jacksonville Rd., Springfield, with Gary Spencer officiating.
