Gary Gerald Smith

Gary Gerald Smith. 86, of Kansas City, formerly of Springfield, passed away on November 19, 2023 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on February 10, 1937 in Mendota, IL. To Samuel Smith and Dorothy Yount. Gary married Nancy Craigmile in Waterman, IL. On May 20, 1961 and she survives.

Mr. Smith is also survived by two daughters: Kathi (John) Russell of Austin, TX. and Julie Brown of Rochester, IL. two sons: Doug (Jamie) Smith of Springfield, IL and Steve (Candy) Smith of Platte City, MO. many grandchildren and great grandchildren, one brother Dave Smith of Florida and one sister Sandra Baumgartner of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents Sam and Dorothy Smith, one brother Tom Smith, and one sister Patty Jordan.

Gary worked in education throughout Illinois and spent the last 15 years of his career as the Riverton High School Principal. After retirement, Gary started a construction company and built custom homes in both Riverton and Springfield. He and Nancy traveled to Fort Myers for the past several years where they wintered in their golf community condo. Gary loved golf, watching Illini basketball and football, eating at restaurants, and most of all his wife, Nancy.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday December 8, 2023 at Camp Butler National Cemetery, 5063 Camp Butler Road, Springfield, Illinois.
