Elwood H. “Woody” Smith, 71, of Springfield died at 2:50 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2003 at St. John’s Hospice. He was born September 24, 1931 in East St. Louis, the son of Elwood and Ermyl Harwell Smith. He married Lanora Nolen on July 28, 1978 in Springfield. Mr. Smith was involved in real estate and was a commercial appraiser. He was a previous Director of Automotive Wholesalers of Illinois for two years and served on the Church Council of Atonement Lutheran Church for five years. Mr. Smith was an accomplished jazz guitarist and played in several area groups. He was also a published author. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife: Lanora, of Springfield; two sons: Mark (wife, Jan) of Springfield and Russell (wife Vanessa) of Los Angeles, CA; one stepdaughter: Leigh Ann Pettus of Springfield; two stepsons: Kim Archione (wife, Debbie) of West Frankfort and Scott Archione of Salt Lake City, UT; nine grandchildren and one great grandson. Memorial service will be at 7:00 p.m., Friday, June 27, 2003 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church with Reverend Wayne P. Hoffman officiating.
