Eleanor Lloyd Cavanagh

A lifelong resident of Springfield, Eleanor was born April 29, 1920, the daughter of George Lewis Lloyd and Flora Tunnell Lloyd. She married William Kane Cavanagh on August 5, 1944 in Washington, D.C., during World War II. He preceded her in death in 1987.

Eleanor was a graduate of Springfield High School, Blackburn College, and Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Prior to her marriage, she taught Home Economics at Virden Community High School. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Home Coterie, and the Sangamo Club. Eleanor was a former member of Wives of Sangamon County Lawyers and Wives of Former Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She also spent many years as a volunteer in the Pastoral Care Department of Memorial Medical Center.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents and four grandchildren: William Kane Cavanagh III, Robert William Magill, Sarah Caroline Cavanagh, and Sean Francis Cavanagh.

She is survived by four sons: William (Colleen Lucas) of Washington, D.C. and Thomas (Diann Reed), Robert (Maureen Drake), and Patrick, all of Springfield; five daughters: Anne (Jeffrey) Magill of Springfield, Mary (Thomas) Corcoran of Springfield, Susan (Robert) Larkin of Silver Spring, MD, and Margaret Maureen (Randy) Squires and Kathleen (Joseph) Khayyat, both of Springfield; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Sandy Cavanagh; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2021 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos, Springfield. Due to COVID restrictions there will be limited capacity.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos, Springfield, with Very Reverend Daniel Bergbower, V.F. officiating. Due to COVID restrictions there will be limited capacity.

Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
