Doris J. "Dodie" Reid, 84, of Springfield, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 3, 2015. She was their pillar of strength until the end, never wavering from her faith and values.
Doris Jean Shaughnessy was born September 7, 1931, in Springfield, IL. She was one of nine children born to Joseph and Lois Argus Shaughnessy. She married Richard Yates Reid on October 6, 1951, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. They are now reunited and can celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary together. Dodie and Dick raised nine children with devout faith and unending devotion. Their children and grandchildren are proud to carry on their legacy.
Dodie graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1949. She worked at Producers Dairy, the State of Illinois, Springfield College in Illinois, and St. John's Hospital, but her most important job was being a stay at home mom for 43 years. Dodie was a talented piano player and delighted family and friends with her music. She also loved playing bridge with her sisters, brothers-in-law, and friends, attending daily mass, doing yardwork, working out at Fit Club, dining out, and attending her children's and grandchildren's activities. Dodie was a St. John's Hospital Samaritan and a member of St. Joseph's Home Coterie and St. Louise de Marillac Guild. She was also a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and served on as many as four PTA boards at once while her children were growing up. Dodie was a member of Christ the King Church where she was in the Over 50 Club and on the committee for funeral luncheons. She and Dick were also active in the Washington Park Pavilion Saturday Night Dance Club.
Dodie will always be remembered for being full of life and having an amazing work ethic. She worked day and night caring for her family, including cooking dinner every night of every week. She kept a very tidy home and made sure her children had what they needed. She not only labored continuously at home but also helped out neighbors when needed. Maintaining a positive attitude contributed to her belief that "it will all work out". Dodie was the epitome of selflessness, always thinking of others before herself. Her greatest accomplishments were being a dedicated wife and mother, as well as a wonderful nana, sister, and pianist.
Dodie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dick; her parents; and a grandson, Nicholas Lowell Taylor.
She is survived by five sons, Dick (wife, Michelle) of Naperville, Bill (wife, Karen), and Chris (wife, Becky), all of Springfield, Dan of New York City, and Doug of Los Angeles; four daughters, Barb (husband, Dave) Farris of Auburn, Mary Lynn Reid (special friend, Bill Sheehan), Kathy (husband, John) Sestak, and Carol (husband, Lance) Taylor, all of Springfield; twenty-two grandchildren, Janelle (husband, Greg) Farris Hutti, Angela (husband, Brian) Farris Schoby, Megan and Michelle Farris, Kristin Kane, Shelby and Dylan Reid, Blake Kerz, Taylor (husband, Bobby) Reid Tennill, Jenna (husband, Clay) Reid Yates, MacKenzie and Jake Reid, Shaughnessy (wife, Tara) Reid, Shay and Nolan Reid, Connor, Jordan, Jessie, and Clint Sestak, and Ryleigh, Cole, and Reid Taylor; six great-grandchildren, Ella and Italia Hutti, Max, Kacie, and Mason Schoby, and Easton Yates; one brother, Joseph Shaughnessy, Jr. of St. Louis; seven sisters, Aurzella Staten, Mary Lou Brennan, Lois Jirgal, Ruth Pohlman, and Barb Sams, all of Springfield, Kitty Monahan of Indiana, and Patti Adams of St. Louis; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Dodie's wishes and staying true to her giving spirit, her body was donated to science for medical research.
