Doris was born on September 12, 1945, in Springfield, the daughter of Donald V. and Doramai (Johnson) Lankford. They, as well as her brother Vic Lankford and sister-in-law Sandy Lankford, preceded her in death.
Doris began her career in mental health as a Mental Health Tech at McFarland Mental Health Center from 1974-1981. She graduated from Nursing School at Lincoln Land Community College in 1981. She continued her work with psychiatric patients at Memorial Medical Center from 1981 until 1990. She transitioned to Doctor’s Hospital where she worked as a Psychiatric Nurse from 1990-1999. She earned her Psychiatric Nurse Certification during her years working in Mental Health. Doris worked as a job coach with the Department of Rehabilitation Services from 2001-2005 and was most recently employed at Lincoln Correctional Center, Lincoln, IL from 2006 to 2009. She was involved in the foster grandparent’s program over the last 15-20 years. Doris had been active at West Side Christian Church in Springfield and more recently Cherry Hills Church in Springfield. Doris had a caring heart for people, and she was a gifted psychiatric nurse. Doris also loved animals and her favorite role was that of a Cat Mom.
She is survived by her niece Becky (husband) Matt Wilson of Rochester, IL; her nephew Jamie (wife Wendy) Lankford of Warwick, RI; 5 great-nephews; 1 great-niece; 1 great great-niece; and several cousins. She is also survived by her life-long friend Sally Whitlock of Springfield and her beloved cat Simba.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 E. Allen, Springfield, where a memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, from 5 pm until time of the memorial service at 6 pm. Per her wishes, cremation rites were accorded.
