He was born in Tuscola, IL, September 1, 1931 the son of Pete and Flossie (Brinkley) Yutzy. He was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University. Don proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956.
Don married Floella “Flo” Phipps in Arthur, IL December 26, 1954 and she survives. Also surviving are his two sons; Jeffrey Yutzy and Kelly Yutzy both of Springfield, his daughter Elaine (Mark) Courtney of New Berlin, IL, eight grandchildren, three great grandchildren, his brother, Richard L. Yutzy of Arthur, IL and several nieces, nephews and cousins. His parents, and a son, Stanley Yutzy preceded him in death.
Known as Mr. Yutzy to many in the Springfield area, was a teacher and coach for many years. He taught Physical Education, traveling to various schools before serving for 24 years at Springfield High School retiring in 1988. He was also an assistant coach at Springfield High School of baseball, football and basketball. Don served with the Springfield Recreation Commission for many years as a baseball coach and umpire. He was inducted to the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 2009, recognized for his many years of dedication to the young athletes in the Springfield area. He was a faithful and active member of West Side Christian Church where he served a various committees and a member and teacher of the Home Builders Sunday School Class.
The family will greet friends from 9:30 am until the time of the funeral service 11:00 am Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at West Side Christian Church 2850 Cider Mill Ln. Springfield, IL 62702 with Pastor Cindy Lash officiating. Burial will follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery, near Fancy Prairie, IL.
