Don married Cinda Schackmann on October 5, 1974 in Danville, IL. She survives.
Don graduated Quincy College and went on to get his masters of social work at the University of Illinois. He worked for Catholic Charities as a social worker for 5 years before spending more than 25 years in the social work department at St. John's Hospital.
Don was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church. At St. Agnes, he was active as a lector, usher, and eucharistic minister. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, Koinonia of Springfield, and St. Francis Light of Love Community.
After retirement Don kept himself busy volunteering at St. Agnes School. During the same time, he and Cinda watched their grandson, Ethan, until he turned one year old.
Don enjoyed family and church functions and was a life-long St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Survivors include his three children, Ryan Steinkamp and his wife, Stephanie, of New Berlin, Leigh Holstein and Patrick, of Chatham, and Jon Steinkamp of Springfield; three grandchildren, Ethan Holstein, Reed and Isla Steinkamp; one granddog, Frankie Holstein; siblings, Dennis Steinkamp and wife, Marcia, of Quincy, and Janet Schmidt and husband, Jan, of Gunnison, CO; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and his cherished dachshund, Snickers.
Visitation and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 11:00 until 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos Ave., Springfield, IL. A Funeral Mass will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Daniel J. Bergbower, celebrant.
Interment will be held at a later date at Resurrection Cemetery in Danville, IL.
