Darrell was a lifelong member of Bricklayer’s Local #8. He spent the last 28 years working on various jobs, recently alongside his friend and mentor, Jim Fortner. He was truly proud of his Brothers & Sisters of all the trades.
In his early life, Darrell alongside his brother Doug, were a staple on the Northend of Springfield. When you seen one brother, you’d immediately see the other, “Doug and Darrell.” Together, they played baseball and many other sports with the neighborhood kids. Darrell was an avid Cubs fan and dreamed of playing professional baseball.
Darrell was also known for his boxing career which began with the Springfield Boxing Club under the Late, Legendary Jack Cunningham. He trained with Luther Howe in the John Hay Homes, The Sangamo Club and Illinois State Fair are just some of the venues where he competed. He was a 3-time Golden Glove Boxing Champion. He competed in 2 National Championships and was runner up in a Tough Man Competition. His love for boxing never wavered. He was a coach and volunteer with the Springfield Youth Boxing Club and other organizations.
Darrell enjoyed spending all of his free time with the many friends that he loved so dearly. He was always the “life of the party” and was known for making an entrance, as he would say, “Showtime has arrived!”
To all the friends, which are too many to mention, as he would say, “I got this!”
