Rusty was born June 12, 1927 in Collinsville, the son of Charles W. and Idabelle Held Sonnenberg. He married Edna Adelman Sonnenberg on May 10, 1952 at Sacred Heart Church, she preceded him in death.
Rusty graduated from St. James Trade School, class of 1945. Rusty served in the United States Army, in the Occupational Forces in Germany at the end of World War II. He was a sought-after auto mechanic; he owned and operated two locations of Rusty's Standard Service. He retired from the State of Illinois Central Management Services as a Head Mechanic, where he worked for 17 years. He was a volunteer at St. Martin De Porres Center. Rusty enjoyed playing senior softball and fishing.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Stowers.
He is survived by his daughter, Geri (husband, Greg) Marion of Springfield; grandson, Adam Marion; brother in law, Glenn Jacobs (wife, Eileen, deceased); sister in law, Nadine Adelman (husband, Bill, deceased); several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and best buddy, Joe Bascio.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 25, 2015 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield, with Rev. Joseph Ring, celebrant and Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz, concelebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
