Carlene Jean Dixon

She was born in Springfield, May 11, 1933 the daughter of Carl and Caroline “Carrie” (Markgref) Herter. She married Lloyd E. Dixon October 9, 1976 in Springfield, and he survives.

She is also survived by her nephew and Godchild Wade Herter, her nephew Kevin (wife Connie) Dixon great nephew Morgan Dixon, her cousin Christian (Samantha) Hoffman and several other cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Warren F. Herter.

Carlene graduated from Springfield High School, class of 1951. She attended Brown’s Business College and retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation as Bureau Chief’s Secretary after thirty-five years of service.

Carlene’s avocation was always music. She was a fifteen year member of the Springfield Municipal Choir under the direction of E. Carl Lundgren. She directed teen-girl vocal groups and the Chatham United Methodist Church Choir and taught piano after her retirement.

Carlene was a member of the ISPE Auxiliary, the Glenarm Community Club and a volunteer usher at UIS Sangamon Auditorium. In prior years, she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Philo Alumnae and National Secretaries. She was a sixty year member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Springfield, and recently a member of Sugar Creek United Methodist Church, Chatham. She was a Sunday School Teacher and was active in the L.C.W. and U.M.W.

Visitation: The Dixon family will receive family and friends at Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. Springfield, IL from 4-7 pm Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016.

Additional Visitation and Service: Additional visitation will be from 9:00 am until time of funeral services at 10:00 am Friday, Sept. 30, 2016 at Sugar Creek United Methodist Church 1022 New City Rd. Chatham, IL 62629. Rev. Allen Miller will officiate. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
