Bruce Rodney Hurst, 58, of Springfield, died Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Walker Nursing Home in Virginia, IL. Bruce was born June 10, 1955 in Springfield, IL, the son of Hamlin and Dorthee (Hirsch) Hurst. Bruce was a 1974 graduate of Springfield High School. He was a residential homebuilder and landlord for 30 years. He enjoyed applying his many skills in the various aspects of building construction. Bruce enjoyed traveling and was fortunate to have traveled to all corners of the globe. He loved many types of artwork and architecture. He visited many of the great museums and historical sites of the world. He was a passionate numismatist for nearly 50 years, and a lifelong Washington Senators baseball fan. Bruce will always be remembered by those that knew him as a gentle giant. He possessed a heart of gold and was always helpful to those in need. He was a devoted son, brother, uncle, and friend. His observations and special turn of phrases never ceased to amaze and entertain those that encountered him. His knowledge of facts and statistics was unsurpassed. Bruce faced many challenges in his life and he met them with a steadfast tolerance that earned him great respect. He will be greatly missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents and two nieces, Tracy and Alison Hurst. He is survived by two brothers, Roger (wife, Sue) Hurst and Gregory (wife, Ann) Hurst, both of Springfield; nephews, Bryan (wife, Bridgette) Hurst and Gregory Hurst; niece, Hilary (Hurst) Gilmer (husband, Darwin); three great-nieces; and one great-nephew. May he rest in peace. Private family services are being held and cremation accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
