Steven B. “Zep” Smith, age 63, of Springboro, OH, passed Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at his residence, with his loving wife, Kathy, at his side. Steven was born in Woonsocket, RI on October 27, 1957 to Robert Eugene and Betty Louise (Balazs) Smith and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy and began his professional career as a hospital pharmacist at Ohio State, working in a variety of dispensing and clinical roles. Steve earned his MBA from Capital University while working with Eli Lilly & Company, where he worked in sales in Cleveland and Grand Rapids, Michigan. He joined United HealthCare of Ohio as their first Pharmacy Manager in 1992. In May of 1993, Steve married his wife Kathy, making their home in Springboro, Ohio. He started working with Merck in 2000 and earned his PharmD through OSU in April, 2007 retiring in 2019. Steve’s many passions included music from all genres, his favorite being Led Zeppelin. He also enjoyed working out, biking, traveling out west, particularly the Canyonlands, sports in general, frisbee competitions with his Border Collie and competing in 5k runs. Steve had a passion for mentoring at Merck and was involved with The Ohio State University student chapter of AMCP. He was a member of Southbrook Christian Church for over 25 years. Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Smith, and survived by his father, Robert Smith; his wife of 28 years, Kathy (Mallion) Smith; his son, Travis Mallion; his grandson, Tripp Mallion, who was the apple of his eye, all of whom he cherished deeply; several cousins and extended family members. He will be remembered by many friends, both personal and professional, and of course by his beloved dogs, Bella and Gizmo and all those who walk so often at North Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pelotonia 2021 (Pelotonia.org/give), a fundraiser for cancer research held each year in August at OSU.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, May 24 at SouthBrook Christian Church in Miamisburg at 11 am. Visitation will be from 10 am to 11 am.
