It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of May Herlands on May 15, 2023. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a cherished grandmother, and a dear friend. May was born in the Bronx on May 31, 1935, where she was raised by a single mother and made many lifelong friendships.
May's life revolved around her family, and she treasured every moment spent with her loved ones. She was the beloved wife of the late Dick Herlands, and together they created a life filled with love and cherished memories. May's dedication to her family knew no bounds, and she found great joy in her sons, Neil (husband Mark) and Ross (wife Karen). She was a doting grandmother to her grandchildren, Liza and Jared, who brought immeasurable happiness to her life.
Beyond her role as a devoted wife and mother, May was a vibrant and social individual who found great pleasure in connecting with dear friends. Her warm and inviting personality drew people to her, and she cultivated lifelong friendships in various communities. May shared countless laughter-filled moments with her dear friends from the Bronx, Rockland County, Green Briar at Whittingham, and Deerfield Beach, Florida.
May also held her Jewish heritage close to her heart. She spent many fulfilling years working at the Monsey Jewish Center, where her dedication and commitment to the community made her a beloved fixture.
May had a deep appreciation for New York City culture and the vibrant energy it exuded. She delighted in attending theater performances, visiting museums, and savoring the diverse culinary offerings of the city. Her passion for intellectual stimulation led her to engage in lively discussion groups, where she relished the exchange of ideas and perspectives.
One of May's favorite pastimes was playing Mah Jong, where she displayed both skill and a competitive spirit, and enjoyed kibbitzing with friends. Additionally, May was an avid reader and could often be found engrossed in a thought-provoking novel or biography.
May's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness, funny stories, infectious laughter, and genuine interest in others' lives made her a treasured friend and confidante. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and the importance of nurturing meaningful relationships.
