On Saturday, June 27, 2020, Lawrence Kenneth Stern passed away peacefully at home, at the age of 85. Larry was born on October 10, 1934, in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, to Harry and Tillie Stern, joining his older sister Gloria. He attended Lincoln H.S., and at the age of twenty, graduated with a degree in accounting from NYU. Larry served in the US Army in Germany in the mid 1950’s. He met his beloved wife, Judy Katzen, on a blind date and they married in 1960. Soon after, they had their first child, Richard, followed by daughter, Karen (Kaya). Larry and Judy raised their family in Monsey, NY. Larry enjoyed a career in corporate finance in Manhattan where he worked for multiple publicly traded companies.
Jewish life was deeply important to Larry. He and Judy were founding members of the Monsey Jewish Center, where they cultivated many lifelong friendships. Upon retirement, they moved to Boynton Beach, Florida, where they expanded their social circle even further. Their two grandchildren, Ariel and Sophie Shrum, were the lights of their lives. Larry was a kind, playful, gregarious and inquisitive man, engaging enthusiastically with everyone he encountered. For the last two years of his life he lived in New England with his daughter Kaya Stern-Kaufman and his son-in-law Steve Kaufman. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Melvin Krupin, his children, Richard Joel Stern and Rabbi Kaya Stern-Kaufman and grandchildren, Ariel and Sophie Shrum. Donations in his memory can be made to HIAS.
