Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Harry was a proud graduate of the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, class of 1961. After the academy, he sailed with the Military Sea Transportation Service and the Merchant Marine before getting married and making a life ashore.
Harry liked to say that he'd had more careers than most people had jobs; these included fire safety engineer, reinsurance executive, computer salesman, and IT systems engineer; he retired as logistics officer at Rockland Mobile Care.
He and his wife, Celia, were devoted partners for the nearly 56 years they were married, until her death in 2021. They shared a passion for their family, for travel, and for service; Harry volunteered as an EMT before working for Rockland Mobile Care and was a longtime member of Westchester REACT. Together, Harry and Celia volunteered at the World Trade Center site in the aftermath of 9/11.
Though Harry ended his professional sailing career in the 1960s, he had a lifelong love of being on the water. He and Celia were active members of Nyack Boat Club's club and cruising fleet, sailing the Polar Star, the Catalina 320 they named for the Antarctic icebreaker they spent their 45th wedding anniversary aboard.
Harry is survived by his children, Carolyn and Peter; their spouses, David and Judith; his grandsons, Evan and Leelynn; and his siblings, Andy and Willa.
His profound decency, optimism (no matter that he considered himself a fatalist), affability, curiosity, and generous spirit were evident to everyone he met. They don’t make ’em like Harry anymore.
