Harry Edelstein, 87, of New City, NY died Saturday, June 9, 2012. Judge Edelstein was born July 24, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Simon & Betty (Josef) Edelstein. Devoted & Loving husband of Zelda (Liebhaber), father of Joan Lauder (Jack), Susan Emanuel (Ira) and Merryl Phillips; brother of Marge Harrison and Frank Edelstein (Harriet). Proud grandfather of Sara, David, Joshua, Blair and Shane, and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. Judge Edelstein served in the Navy during WWII. Graduating in 1951 from Brooklyn Law School, Judge Edelstein moved to Rockland in 1955 and opened a storefront law office in Haverstraw, NY. He was elected to the Rockland County Court in 1975 and reelected in 1984. Upon leaving the bench he returned to private practice, retiring in 2006. Always known as the People's Lawyer, "Mr. Harry" helped found the Rockland Legal AID Society, Rockland Chapter of the NAACP, Hi Tor Animal Shelter and was active in many other community causes. He served as President of the Nanuet Hebrew Center and First Commander of the Rockland Post of the Jewish War Veterans. Services for Judge Edelstein will be held 11am @ the New City Jewish Center Monday. Interment will follow, Beth-El Cemetery in Paramus, NJ. Shiva will be at the Edelstein Residence.
