Carol Brenda Sutherland, 80, of Nyack, NY (formerly of Suffern, NY), a loving mother and grandmother, respected science teacher and lifelong plant enthusiast, passed away peacefully on July 11. Born August 17, 1941 to a large Russian-Jewish family in the Bronx, Carol was an exceptional student, graduating from high school at 16, Hunter College at 19 and earning a Masters in botany at Yale. She taught botany at Hunter College before leaving academia to raise her children.
Carol later resumed teaching, having a long career as a science educator in the East Ramapo School District. She and her late husband George shared passions for opera, travel, and tending to their greenhouse. A consummate cook and entertainer, she kept her home filled with friends and family. In her years of retirement, Carol enjoyed the cultural offerings of her native New York City with her daughter and traveled often to Asia and Australia to visit her son and his family. The daughter of Leo and Sarah Kaplan, Carol is survived by her daughter Jennifer, son Alexander, son-in-law Justin, grandchildren Oscar and Louisa, stepchildren Betsy, Janet and Gail, and brother Eric.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 24, 2022 at Hellman Memorial Chapels, 15 State Street, Spring Valley, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the New York Botanical Gardens.
