Bernard was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 27, 1925 to William and Minnie Bernstein. He was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps for service during World War II. After proudly serving his country, he graduated from the University of Illinois and Iowa State University. He then obtained his doctorate in psychology from Northwestern University and continued his post-doctoral studies at New York University and the Payne-Whitney Psychiatric Clinic. Dr. Bernstein worked as a research psychologist at G.D. Searle and Lederle Laboratories, before joining the Rockland County Department of Mental Health. He retired as Coordinator of the Forensic Mental Health Services in 1996. He then joined the faculty of Long Island University and taught psychology at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and also continued in private practice until shortly before his death. He was an avid boater, skier and has a passion for flying planes. Among his many associations, he was a member of the American Psychological Association, Northwestern University Alumni Association and the American Legion Post 130.
Bernard is survived by his loving wife Mildred, his children Len Bernstein and Kathi Tower-Bernstein, Elizabeth Keating and Daniel Keating and grandchildren Michael and Kelly Bernstein.
Services will be held on Monday, March 18, 2013, 1 P.M. at Hellman Memorial Chapels, 15 State Street, Spring Valley, NY followed by burial at the Frederick Loescher Veterans Cemetery in New Hempstead with full military honors. Shiva will be on Tuesday, March 19 from 4 to 8 PM at the Bernstein residence.
