Roberto Perez Lavergne was born on February 20, 1933 in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico to Margarita Lavergne and Eduardo Perez. He peacefully passed on to eternity Monday, December 9, 2019 at home with his family. Roberto was the brother of the following pre-deceased siblings; Candido, Carmen, Tonia, Martin, Raymond and surviving siblings Felicita Perez, Orlando (Ana) Lavergne and Edwin(Maritza) Perez.
At 18 years old, he moved to Glen Cove, NY, was drafted into the US Army and served during the Korean War. Upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, he settled in Roslyn, NY, where he met and married the love and joy of his life, Julia Ann Robinson on June 1, 1957.
Roberto made his home in Westbury, Long Island, where he worked various trades until he became a subway conductor/flagman for the New York City Transit Authority. In 1989 he retired from the transit and a year later moved to Spring Hill, Florida where he enjoyed a wonderful and exciting life. There he made many new friends, joined the Penpals bowling team, was an active member of the 369th Veterans Association, the African-American Club, and the New York City Transit retirees. During this last year he attended Lighthouse Tabernacle of Praise Church under the leadership of Pastor Claire Cox. Affectionately known as Poppi, he loved people and he was dearly loved.
He leaves to cherish with fond and lasting memories, his wife, Ann of 62 years, his children Robin (Kim) Lavergne, Julia (Michael) Peace, Rose Addison, Roberto Jr. (Deceased) and Carmen. In addition, Poppi shared in the upbringing of Martin (Yvonne) Lavergne Jr. and Isa Simmons as he always referred to them as his sons which he lovingly expressed to both before his passing. His grandchildren are Roberto JD, Jonathan, Michael, Jordan, Imani, Isa as well as his great grandchildren Zenacia, Alariun, A.J., Jayden, Jai’ahni, Jaida, Jolee, Kingston and Apollo.
Roberto maintained loving relationships on both sides of the family with a whole host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Roberto will be greatly missed as he always tried to quote a saying from his Sister in law, Margie Robinson “ It’s time to ease on down the road” except Poppi could never get it right. He would always say “ he’s gonna easy on down the road”. We love you Poppi!
