He was born in Salinas, Puerto Rico on December 12, 1935. He graduated from Washington-Irvine Adult High School, New York, New York. He attended several trade schools and colleges, taking classes in several studies: Brooklyn Automotive Trade School – Brooklyn New York, Law enforcement and firearms – Pasadena City College.
He was married to Lydia Reyes on September 30, 1967.
Hernan held several positions throughout his life: Laborer, Security Guard, Post office worker. Ultimately, he worked as a custodian for the city of South Gate, California and retired in June 2000 after 20 years on the job. He was also an Interim Pastor for the Assembly of Christian Churches, once in Puerto Rico and once in South Gate, California.
He was a member of the Assembly of Christian Churches for many years both in New York and California at Templo Bethesda. He sang in multiple choirs throughout the years in New York, Puerto Rico and California. He taught Church history at the Bible Institute for the Assembly of Christian Churches in Pasadena, California for many years preparing leaders for ministry. In Florida he was a member at the First Church of the Nazarene Spring Hill, FL and Calvary Church of the Nazarene Spring Hill, FL.
He had a passion for gardening, animals, reading (especially histories and biographies), singing, painting, walking, crab fishing with his wife, playing dominoes, watching baseball and boxing.
He was predeceased b his son, Efrem David Santiago; and siblings, (s. Andres Rodriguez), Elizabeth (s. Jose), Abraham, Esteban (s. Nelsa) and Maria (s. Malen).
He was survived by wife, Lydia Reyes Santiago; two daughters Edda Santiago Sanborn (s. Thomas Scott Sanborn) and Vanessa Santiago Rodgers (s Reginald Lamonte Rodgers); siblings,
Domingo (s. Priscila), (s. Julio Chea),), Miguel (s.Theresa), Valentina (Reina), Pedro (Pete) (s.Corinna), Daniel (Danny) (s. Maria), Sadrach (Laly) (s. Gloria),), Juan (Johnny) (s Alanda), Luisa (s. Richard Farrell), and Jose (Joey) (s Evelyn); grandchildren, Zane Nevin Geddes-Santiago (s Erika Marie), John Aaron Sanborn (s Kimberly), Jonathan Zane Rodgers, Emily Ann Sanborn and Dominique Jordan Rodgers; and multiple nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6-8pm, Wednesday June 15, 2022 at Turner Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11am, Thursday June 16, 2022 at Turner Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Florida Hills Memorial Gardens.
