Harry N. Gowans, age 82, of Spring Hill, FL. died at the Hernando Pasco Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, FL. on Monday, October 12, 2015. Harry was born on December 3, 1932, in Columbia, PA, to the late Herbert V. & Gertrude Mae (Harmon) Gowans. Harry was a current resident of Spring Hill for over 15 years. Previously he was a resident of Savanah, GA, for 10 years and prior to that a resident of Reading, PA and Temple, PA. Harry was a retired Parts Manager for the Hertz Penske Truck Leasing Corporation. Harry was a proud Korean War Veteran of The US Army, serving for two years as a Tech SGT, followed by six years of service in the National Guard, and three years in the Air Force Reserves. Harry volunteered as an EMT ambulance driver for Muhlenberg Volunteer Ambulance Service in Temple, PA. He was active in the VFW and served his church in many areas. In his spare time, Harry enjoyed golfing. Harry’s Christian faith was Episcopalian and he held many different positions including; Usher, Verger, Therifor, and Masters of Ceremonies. He was the first licensed Lay person to serve the Chalice during mass. He held memberships at St. Mary’s and St. Alban’s Episcopal churched in Reading, PA. He belonged to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Savanah, GA. And Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Spring Hill, FL. Harry was a life member of the VFW Post #10209 in Spring Hill and served for many years on the Honor Guard team where he later became the Commander of the team. He was also a member of the Korean War Veterans Legion Post 5053, and the Pennsylvania Club, in Spring Hill. Harry is survived by his loving wife, Elenora Gowans of Spring Hill, FL., daughters; Elenora E. Hall and Husband Edward Boyd, of Spring Hill, and Victoria J. Scott and husband Rickie Scott of Savanah, GA. Grandchildren; Andrea Liverman, Christopher Hall, Angela Scott, and Melissa Dismuke, 7 great grandchildren, and brother Herbert Gowans and his wife Dolores of Spring Hill. A Memorial Service will be held at the Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 2301 Deltona Blvd. Spring Hill, FL on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 11 am, with The Rev. Lance Wallace and Fr. Donald Lillpopp celebrating. The Military Honors will follow at Florida National Cemetery at 1 pm; with the VFW 10209 officiating. A reception is planned for 3pm at the VFW Post following the services. In lieu of flowers, donations in Harry’s memory may be made to the Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Cremation and funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Turner Funeral Homes, Spring Hill Chapel.
