Anthony J. “Tony” Vuolo, Sr., 96, of Spring Hill, Florida passed away peacefully at The Residence at Timber Pines in Spring Hill on Friday, May 20th, 2022. He was born in Goshen, New York on May 19th, 1926, to Pascal Vuolo and Rose (Cucci) Vuolo. Tony Graduated from Goshen Central High School, Goshen, New York in June of 1944. He was drafted into the Army in September 1944 and was sent to Basic Training in Camp Wheeler in Macon, Georgia. His basic training was cut short when, due to the Battle of the Bulge (The Ardennes Offensive), he was sent to England by a Navy troop transport ship and then to France via LST. He was transferred to Luxembourg City and assigned to the Third Army, 292nd Combat Engineer Unit that was attached to the 26th Armored Calvary under the direct command of General George Patton, where he entered the Battle of the Bulge. His unit fought from there through Germany, liberating several Nazi work camps and ultimately building a pontoon bridge crossing the Rhine River into Oppenheim, Germany. After VE Day Patton sent his 3rd Army to Oslo, Norway for some well-deserved R and R. In September of 1945 Tony was re-assigned and placed in charge of the motor pool for Supreme Headquarters, under command of General D.D Eisenhower, in Merfy, France. In September of 1945 he was transferred to the 612th Graves Registration Company in Germany. After 18 months in Europe, he was transferred home and received his Honorable Discharge at Fort Dix, N.J. as a Sergeant Tech-4. During his service he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, multiple battle ribbons and 3 Unit Citations
On September 7, 1947, he married his High School sweetheart, Jacquelyn “Jackie” Lazier at St. John’s, Catholic Church in Goshen, N.Y. He went to work as an auto mechanic in Goshen and in 1952 became the new car service manager at Orange Count Buick in Middletown, NY. In 1955 he was hired by the Division for Youth, State of N.Y., Boys Training School, Otisville, N.Y as an Automotive Instructor. He attended Orange County Community College at night, NYU extension courses, and summer school at S.U.N.Y Oswego. In 1964 he earned his BS Degree in Education and his Master’s Degree in Vocational Technical Education in 1967.Subsequently he earned is high school Principal certification and became the Education Supervisor at the Goshen Center for Boys, Division for Youth. He was also an Associate Professor at Orange County Community College.
After 30 years as an Educator for the Division for Youth, Tony retired with Jackie to Spring Hill in 1980. They were part of the original parishioners for St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church. Tony continued to work and became an Investigator for the Division of Children and Families in Hernando County and taught alternative education students in Brooksville. At age 65 he retired again. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 10209 and was Post Commander 1997-98. He was also a lifetime member of the Hernando Sportsman Club and an NRA Safety Training Instructor. He always enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, skier( in NY) and was active as a Boy Scout Leader from 1958 to 1975.
Tony was preceded in death by Jackie, his loving wife of 67 years and survived by his three sons: Dr. Anthony J. Vuolo, Jr. and his wife Karen, of Ivyland, PA, David. J. Vuolo and his fiancée Linda Bailey of Jacksonville, FL, and James A. Vuolo of Tampa, Fl. Also, Grandson, Anthony J. Vuolo, III of Walden, N.Y., Granddaughter Kimberly M. Vuolo of North Wales, PA, Great Grandson, Dominic Vuolo and Great Granddaughter Nina Vuolo both of Walden, N.Y., Sister-In Law Wanda White of Middletown , NY and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Thursday, June 2nd, 2022, 9:30AM located at Turner Furner Home in Spring Hill.
