Willard Jay Grant was born to Joseph and Hilda Grant Aug. 6, 1925, in Springville, Utah. He attended local schools and then enlisted in The United States Navy in 1943, where he trained as a pilot. He was in Pensacola, Florida when the war ended. He attended Utah State College and eventually formed Grant Construction Company in Hayden Lake, Idaho with his father, his brother Darwin, and his brother-in-law Melvin Johnson. Together they built many miles of roads and highways through Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Jay served as president of the local chapter of The Associated General Contractors and was a national director of that organization as well. He married LaRee Swenson in 1946. They had two daughters, Holly and Cherry, and two sons, Finley and Calvin. Jay was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he served in many callings including twice as bishop. After retirement he and his wife LaRee served as temple workers in Spokane and Seattle, as well as missionaries for the LDS church in Nigeria. Jay loved hunting, fishing and flying. He took family and friends on many trips around the country, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Canada, flying them in his airplane. Jay passed away in his sleep Dec. 29, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dayma, brother-in-law Mel, and his daughter Holly. He is survived by his wife LaRee, daughter Cherry (Marc Shapiro), son Finley (Hilda), son Calvin, 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday January 3, 1012 at 1:00PM at The LDS chapel, 23515 E. Boone, Liberty Lake.
