Sid was a graduate of Elk River High School, Hamline University, and the University of Minnesota from which he received his MS Degree in Physical Metallurgy. Sid played football and basketball for Hamline, and was a member of the 1942 NAII National Champion Basketball team. His professional career began with the Chrysler Corporation where he worked on turbine fan blade alloy development in Detroit, MI; which eventually led to his position as Sr. Research Scientist for Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane WA, and Pleasanton, CA, from which he retired.
Sid served as a Surgical Technician in the US Army in WWII. He served in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, and Central Europe. Sid served in Patton’s Third Army and participated in the relief of Bastogne. After the war, he served in the occupation force in Czechoslovakia where he played football.
Sid loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trapshooter.
He is predeceased by his wife, Marlyn, his son Richard, and his siblings Jack, Lloyd, and Margaret. Sid is survived by his daughter Christine Batty, his sons Sidney Gregory and Jeffrey, and his grandchildren Alyssa, Matthew, Kate, Heidi, Hayley, Emily and Mason.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 4, 2012 from 10:00AM to 1:00PM at Thornhill Valley Chapel, 1400 S. Pines Rd, Spokane Valley, WA, followed by a Graveside service, 2:00PM at Pines Cemetery, 1402 S. Pines Rd, Spokane Valley.
