She was born and raised in Spokane, Wa by her parents, the late Ed and Eunice (Olson) Grimmer. She graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1963.
Shirley met her soulmate, John, at Messiah Lutheran Church and Shadle HS as teens enjoying fellowship and friendship in the church youth group. They married September of 1963 and spent their 37 years together raising their family in Spokane and Nine Mile Falls.
Shirley and John volunteered as youth group leaders, Sunday School teachers, and Lutheran Marriage Encounter leaders. Shirley was active in the Nine Mile Falls community volunteering with the Nine Mile Falls school PTG, Campfire Girls, GFWC Nine Mile Falls Juniors club. Her role in these organizations was as a right-hand woman, never wanting the responsibility as leader. She helped put on a haunted house for three years and a Nine Mile Falls community cookbook.
Shirley’s main profession was homemaker but after the children were older she worked at The Guardian and more suitably Beneficial In Home Care.
Fittingly, Shirley collected Angels. Their symbolic meaning of goodness and offering comfort and aid to others represents Shirley’s life. Shirley was a selfless caretaker of her parents, in-laws and Aunt in their late years.
Shirley was devoted to her Lutheran faith and family. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. She loved attending all their activities, hosting birthday and holiday gatherings, and being the best mom and grandma to all.
Our matriarch and loving generous guardian Angel has become a heavenly Angel, reuniting with her beloved husband.
Shirley is survived by her 4 children: daughters, Rondie (Sam) Judy of Spokane; Jennie (Mark) Ablondi of Glacier, Wa; sons, John (Kristin) of Richland, Wa; and Ed (Essilyn) of Pearland, Tx. Her ten grandchildren: Rena Tillotson, Jessica (Ben) Johnson, Crystal (Trey) Savory, Brandon Judy, Miabella Ablondi, Robert Ablondi, Charlie Wells, Henry Wells, Emma Wells and Evan Wells.
Her nine great-grandchildren: Kaedyn, Quentyn, Malakai, Avyanna, Camdyn, Alexes, Gavin, Cheyenne, and Trinity.
She is also survived by Sister-in-Law, Claudia Grimmer, of Houston, Tx and niece Molly and nephew Breck; and numerous cousins.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws David and Mary Wells; brother Carl F Grimmer, and most importantly, husband John Wells.
The family would like to thank all of her healthcare providers, including Hospice of Spokane.
Shirley’s wish was to have no services. If you wish to honor her, donations can be made to Messiah Lutheran Church (4202 N Belt Spokane, Wa 99205) or a non-profit of your choice.
She will be cremated and laid to rest at Spokane-Cheney Memorial Garden. Professional services are being conducted by Ball & Dodd Funeral Home.
Don’t remember me with sadness, Don’t remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, We’ve shared throughout the years. Now I am contented That my life it was worthwhile, Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile. When you are walking down the street And you’ve got me on your mind, I’m walking in your footsteps, Only half a step behind. So please don’t be unhappy, Just because I’m out of sight, Remember that I’m with you Each morning, noon, and night.
