10/16/1955 – 10/24/2023
Don’t let anything steal your joy! A farewell she often gave to friends, family, and strangers alike. She lived it as a key part of her life, laughing at times when others would be angry or crying.
Peggy Stevens Lewis passed away at home on October 24, 2023 after battling cancer for six years.
She was born on October 16, 1955 in Spokane and grew up in Cheney, graduating from Eastern Washington University in 1978 with a German, physical education and a teaching degree. After spending a year teaching in LaCenter Washington, she decided that teaching wasn’t for her and moved back to the Spokane area. She worked at Keytronic for about 5 years, where she met her husband “Joe” (Larry). She left to work / volunteer for various non profits before moving to full time mother when Christine was born.
She was very involved with the Camp Fire organization throughout her life. She was in a Camp Fire club when growing up, attending camp every year at Sweyolakan on Coeur d’Alene lake. As an adult, she led Camp Fire clubs, volunteered at the Dart-Lo day camp, and many other volunteer activities. At every opportunity she went out to Sweyolakan. That included attending every annual women’s retreat until recently when health issues, covid or heavy smoke from fires conspired to cancel or keep her away. She was always seen on the beach, slowly searching for arrowheads or other treasures.
She was active in sports as a youth and was on both the track and gymnastics teams in high school. Her favorite however was volleyball, playing in both high school and college, and on recreation league teams after graduation. For many years she refereed local high school and college volleyball matches. As she got older she spent more time at various types of crafts, including tatting, stamping, making family photo albums, beading and making necklaces / bracelets.
Especially in her last few years she had the opportunity to travel the world. She went on cruises to Alaska, Europe, Australia, Iceland-Greenland and the Panama Canal, as well as a visiting Thailand.
Her faith was the foundation of her life. She put it in practice even in the small daily things of life, like praying for a parking space or to find a lost item; “God knows where it is, I’m just asking Him to let me in on it.” In addition to attending Holy Cross Lutheran for most of her married life, she studied with Bible Study Fellowship groups, volunteering there many years in the children’s program. At church she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, sang solos, and acted in plays.
Her quick wit, sharp mind, insightful comments and compassionate / friendly words to those in need will be missed. Don’t let anything, not even this, steal your joy!
She is preceded in death by her parents Harold and Jean Stevens.
She is survived by her husband “Joe” Larry Lewis, daughters Christine and Rachel Lewis, siblings Kathy Stevens and Mark (Lindsay) Stevens, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7307 N Nevada Street, Spokane, on November 11 at 1:00pm.
