Marvin Dwight Smith (93) was born in Dishman, WA on September 28, 1928 to Sidney and Marion Smith. Marvin had an older brother, Stacy and a younger sister, Catherine. All four of his family members preceded him before his passing. Marvin was an educator his entire life, and many of his students remember him as their Elementary School Principal. He worked for the West Valley School District (Spokane) for most of his career. Education is a longstanding family tradition in the Smith family. Marvin met his loving wife Ethel when he was stationed in the Navy in Boston, MA. They married in Everett, MA on August 21. 1954, and they were happily married for 55 years. Ethel preceded Marvin in death in 2009.
Marvin enjoyed snow skiing, golfing, gardening, boating, daily crossword puzzles, reading, college football and basketball games, swimming in his backyard pool, and especially spending time with his family. Marvin was a member of the Lion's Club where he also served in leadership. The Oregon Coast and oldest son's River Property were his favorite destination places. Marvin and Ethel were able to spend quality vacation time together in Europe, Mexico, and Nova Scotia; as well as on various cruises. Marvin is lovingly survived by his sons, Jeff (Kim) and Mark Smith, his daughter, Jodi Smith-Vessels (Steve) all of Spokane, WA. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren- Scott, Kayla, and Angela Smith; and Sam and Max Vessels. Marvin proudly is survived by 2 great-grandchildren- Jett and Rosie Smith. Marvin had many cousins, nieces, and nephews who loved him dearly. Marvin's family will cherish his memory and love him forever- and he will be truly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 16 at Millwood Presbyterian Church (3223 N. Marguerite Road) at 1:00 pm. A viewing will be available from 4:00 to 5:00pm at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home (1400 S. Pines Road) on Thursday, October 14.
Marvin passed peacefully in his sleep on the afternoon of Sunday, October 3, 2021 tenderly surrounded by all of his children. Contributions in his memory may be made to Kindred Hospice and to the Millwood Presbyterian Memorial Fund. His family thanks you for your continued prayers and support.
