Mark was born on September 28, 1932, to George Hillary Miller and Nancy Caroline Miller in McLeansboro, Illinois. Raised in the midst of the depression, he developed an unparalleled work ethic which, along with an incredibly quick mind and thirst for knowledge, served him well through life’s journey. He graduated high school at age 14 and, by age 18, had earned his Bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He would go on to earn a Doctorate in Education from the University of Illinois, but not before serving with honor in the Navy during the Korean war. He would attend Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and serve on both the USS Missouri and USS New Jersey battleships during this time. After spending three years as a college professor at Central Missouri State University, he accepted an administrative position for District 81 schools and moved his family to a new life in Spokane.
Mark was the Director of Technical and Vocational Education for the district until his retirement in 1992. One of his proudest career achievements was his involvement in the launch and enormous success of the Spokane Skills Center which specializes in teaching real job skills to high schoolers from area school districts.
By far Mark considered his greatest achievement and joy was marrying the love of his life, Francis Naomi Miller. Their 50 year marriage ended much too soon but we know dad is reunited with her now.
Mark leaves behind four children and nine grandchildren, and so many great memories which will endure for many lifetimes.
Services will take place at Dishman Baptist Church on Saturday, March 31st, at 1:00 pm. We are all grateful to the amazing and compassionate staff at Providence Sacred Heart Hospital for their care of our father.
