Beloved father, brother and uncle, avid golfer, and steadfast legal defender of the underserved, John Jay Mann, 64, passed away July 28, 2016, surrounded by family and friends. John was born in Coldwater, Michigan December 12, 1951, where he grew up on a family farm with his parents and three siblings, relocating at the age of 9 to Winter Park, Florida. He attended Georgia Southern University before graduating from Florida State University. After traveling through California, John moved to Spokane to attend law school at Gonzaga, where he graduated in 1981. After a short time in private practice, John moved to the Spokane County Public Defender’s office, where for more than 27 years he defended the rights of the mentally ill, the unfortunate, and those that could not speak for themselves. In his down time, John could be found on the golf course, hitting some good shots, some bad shots, but always enjoying being outside. He played the game well, shooting in the 60’s and hitting a hole in one on two occasions, winning a car during a tournament for one of the shots. He only occasionally threw his club in frustration. John found the good in everyone and left a lasting impression on those who were fortunate enough to cross his path. His infectious laugh will ring on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He was a loving father and loyal friend. He is survived by his sons, Luke and Jason; three grandsons, Desmond, Brody and Gus; daughter-in-law Sarah; his siblings, Pete, Maggie, and Drew; and loved ones Shannon, Ryan, Madisen, and Blake. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider making a donation to a local charity or non-profit organization.
