Helen “Alice” Allen entered into rest July 5, 2017 in Spokane Valley, WA. She was born December 21, 1929 in Newburgh, New York to Alois and Helen Dirnberger. She graduated from Highland Falls High School in 1946 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ladycliff College. She married Lt. Boyde W. Allen, Jr., on June 7, 1949 on his graduation day from West Point at the Old Cadet Chapel, West Point, New York.
She was always active in the community and church affairs, including a stint with the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She demonstrated uncompromising steadfastness, raising four children, while her husband served overseas and through many, many relocations during his military career. She received a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Army for her unfailing support.
When her husband retired in 1975 after nearly three decades of service, they moved to Washington and spent their golden years enjoying the country life. Because her husband was an avid gardener, she became a Master Food Preserver, out of “self-defense”, as she put it, and got a Blue Ribbon for her canning at the Stevens County Fair. Her favorite pastimes were yard-saling and antique collecting. Known to the family as “G”, a nickname given by her first granddaughter, she was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her sons, Boyde III and Michael, and daughters, Linda and Stephanie; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and preceded by her husband, Boyde Jr. and daughter, Valerie. A private funeral service will be held.
Arrangements under the direction of Thornhill Valley Chapel, Spokane, WA.
