Glenn Johnson entered into the presence of the Lord on April 29, 2024 at 94 years of age. He was born in Spokane in 1930, to Lyle and Evelyn Johnson, and graduated from Rogers High School. He married Hallie Fleenor in 1950, and began working as a carpenter in Spokane.
The couple quickly had children and began their family. But Glenn struggled with alcoholism, and failed to meet the challenges of being a husband and father. After their third child was born, God intervened in their lives.
Through the love and outreach efforts of members of Beacon Chapel church, Glenn and Hallie gave their lives to Jesus Christ on October 2, 1955, and what a difference he made in their lives. Glenn stopped drinking, and started sharing the Good News of Jesus with others.
He embarked on an exciting journey of trusting and obeying God. This led him and Hallie to four years of Bible school in Canada, ten years of fruitful (and dangerous) ministry in Viet Nam (1965-75), becoming the founding pastor of Northview Bible Church in Spokane (1976-89), spending 11 years in the Philippines training pastors (1989-2000), and finally returning to Spokane to pastor Chattaroy Community Church until Hallie went to be with the Lord in 2005.
He later married Dorothy Slater, and the couple enjoyed eight years of life and ministry together–ministering to inmates at Geiger and Spokane County jail, and holding pastor’s conferences in Viet Nam, Nepal, and the Philippines, until Dorothy passed away in 2014. He spent the last eight years of his earthly life at Rockwood Hawthorne, where he loved and was loved by the caring staff there.
Glenn’s life was marked by a deep love for Christ and his word; faithful obedience to God; a humble willingness to accomplish whatever task God asked of him–big or small; a genuine love for people; and a grateful enjoyment of the life he’d been given–starting with his family of whom he was so proud, sports of all kinds, fishing, reading, history, good food, laughing at a good joke, and taking a good vacation.
Glenn is survived by children Tom (Dee), Glenda Childers (Dave), Sue Fink (Rich), Ruth Moorehead (Rocky), Tim (Holly), fifteen grandchildren, and more than 25 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind countless people he led to faith in Jesus, couples he married, and families he sat with in times of crisis.
Thank you dad for being such an inspiring example of what an ordinary person can do when they trust God and obey him. Thank you dad and mom for being a true partnership in life and ministry. You are greatly missed.
A memorial service for Glenn will be held at Northview Bible Church (13521 N. Mill Rd; Spokane, WA 99208) on Saturday, June 15, at 1PM.
